Making British poverty history
16/10/2007
Today I was at Chance UK in London, which runs mentoring schemes for very young children who have had a difficult start in life, and who need help to get them on the right track.

Subject: Inspiring speech and visit
Having watched the speech in full on the Conservative website I felt inspired by David Cameron's vision of a Britain without poverty and his refusal to accept that poverty is inevitable. Poverty should be confined to the 20th century.
I particularly support David's pledge to end the revolving door of welfare dependency. Welfare weakens aspiration and becomes stigma. As a nation we must not accept that five million of our fellow citizens, equal in number to the population of Scotland, are written off as being lumpen-unemployed and condemned to a life on benefits.
