My speech on demographic change in the UK
29/10/2007
I think our Party needs to make sure that our policies meet every challenge our country faces, and one of the most important of those challenges that I addressed today is demographic change. I think it's time we had a grown-up conversation about our population and immigration.

Subject: Set employment focus on the young
I agree with every aspect of today's speech. Particularly the promised reforms to welfare and future proposals for a revolutionary training programme.
One thing does worry me though. How can we provide work for over five million people when only just over half a million vacancies are available at any given time?
The situation would be helped greatly if the future Conservative government sets the focus on finding work for our young and treat that as the priority objective. Labour have made much fanfare about getting the over 45s and the disabled into work while at the same time youth unemployment has increased by 20%. To my mind Labour's employment strategy has been back-to-front. The young are the group most likely to be in need of disposable income and are the group most likely to be lured into criminal sub-culture if they don't have ready access to money.
On the question of disability, all government departments such as JSA, income support and incapacity benefit should be merged into one benefit with one flat basic payment. The very fact that people can claim more by being on incapacity benefit creates a dependency culture. Of course those with special needs should have the option to apply for more money to meet those needs, but each case should be judged on an individual basis.

You're right David. And ignore the inevitable, foundationless "lurch to the right" accusations from Labour evert time this issue is given a mention.

In regard to David's speech on immigration, the problem with the UK immigration is that the system is completely out of control. It is impossible to have a reasonable debate on immigration facts/figures based on assumptions and estimates.Nobody really knows how many people are leaving or arriving in the country so as to generate a net immigration figure.
Secondly, the EU nationals are not really affected by immigration controls. The controls are applied to the legal migrants who have already been through a frustrating, lenghty and expensive visa application process (involving finger prints).
I think the way forward is for Britain to sort itself out as per migration from Europe (free travel)which implies that large numbers from Europe can live and work in Britain with full rights and benefits.
It is worth investigating the number of British emigrating to Europe in comparison with the Europeans arriving in Britain. This will enable the politicians to establish the winners and losers in Europe.
Reduction of number of non-EU migrants is not the way forward. This was applied in 2004 prior to the new states joining the EU but it did not solve the migration problem.
I think it is about time to face the truth about the large numbers of migrants from the new EU states.

Just seen on this evenings news, another 300k immigrants added to the figure.
And there are plans to build how many new homes a year? 250k? the figures just dont add up if there are more entering the country than houses going up.
What about our own people? Along with the announcement that there is a predicted record number of repossesions next year.
Are we building a new Yugoslavia with different factions all on a hair trigger and ready to revolt?
Enoch Powell could have been right, perhaps there will be "rivers of blood".
