Google, Gangs and Governor Schwarzenegger
15/10/2007
I was in California this weekend to make a speech at the Google Zeitgeist Conference. I also met with Governor Schwarzenegger and discussed with members of the Los Angeles Police Department how best to deal with the rising problems of guns and gangs.

Subject: Responsibility...?
David: You talk about what is or is not a Government's responsibility and say "I don't think responsibility is something you can impose on people, I think it's within us all, it's one of the things that makes us human.
"The more you try to do things for people, the less responsible they become".
I agree with these sentiments entirely.
So why is it that you will not make it your Party's policy to oppose the Government's plans to "impose responsibility" on people by outlawing "extreme pornography" because we, seemingly, cannot be trusted to be "responsible" when viewing it?
Or is this just an example of "Special Pleading" because "it's different in this case"??

Subject: Trying to Look Like an Ordinary Person?
Mr Cameron, you claim that your party has an ideal of (and I quote,) "Trying to look like you - the ordinary British person."
Firstly, how can you possible say this when your whole Front Bench is filled with ex-Public School Pupils?
Secondly, do ordinary people give a speech to a Google Zeitgeist Conference?
Thirdly, do so called ordinary people meet Arnold Schwarzenegger? Bear in mind that when, at your Party Conference, Boris Johnson stepped up to the podium there was a live link to Governor Arnie. During which he was heard to say that Boris making mistakes all over the place (I forget his exact words.) This coming from a man with a minutiae of political experience, can you really say that Johnson is your party's best choice for a Mayoral candidate of our capital city? Will you take full responsibility for Johnson's mistakes, or will you continue to take no part in the troubles that have been created by your fellow ministers? At least the PM can do something like this, he has an integrity...will you show yours and take responsibility for your party?

Subject: A very positive approach
I pleases me greatly that our future prime minister is prepared to go out around the world, to listen, to learn from the experiences of others.
On the subject of gangs I recently watched a documentary on the Californian Aryan Brotherhood gang in America and time and time again gang members said "This gang is like a familiy" and that is the core problem. Family breakdown leads young men into looking for a sense of belonging that isn't there in the family and they turn to gangs like 'The Brotherhood' notice the name 'Brotherhood' it even propagates the family concept.

It's not about where you're from, it's where you're going. I see the Labour Party is still fighting the class war. How old-fashioned.

Subject: If David Cameron wants to appear progressive then Zeitgeist is a great place to be
Speaking at events like Zeitgeist and networking with the people in attendance is exactly the sort of thing that David Cameron should be doing if he wants to present himself as a politician of the future.
This event brings together business leaders, marketers, huminatarians, visionaries and entrepreneurs. Fresh ideas are born in this sort of environment and it is vital to maintain a dialogue with the people who are shaping our future. It is also great for a British speaker to be presenting and I thought the reference to Bebo was a nice touch!
The software that Mr. Cameron shows about the developing world was developed by a Swedish professor called Dr. Hans Rosling. He is a quite brilliant presenter and his full presentation utilising this data can be found on my personal blog:
