The benefits of flexible working

15/06/2007
On Thursday I joined the Equal Opportunities Commission to help launch their report on the benefits of flexible working.

Subject: Flexible working for ALL

This is brilliant. Exactly what we need - some forward thinking. Flexible working for ALL - and it should be for everyone - not just for people with small children.

If you are serious about flexible working I suggest that you talk to Sun Microsystems who have pioneered the development and USE of technology that makes truly flexible and mobile working a reality.

Great start. As canvas says, eventually everyone should benefit from the new age of flexible working. It's a much better scheme than fixed hours which I used to do.

Subject: Flexible Working & Greener Lower CO2 emissions

Great that this is being taken seriously and should be adopted everywhere.

One of the biggest obstacles that many face is how will data be secure and at what expense?

Look at this from a different angle, being that new technologies are out there to allow this and make huge dent in the amount of CO2 and energy waste they omit.

‘As the need to conserve energy and cut CO² emissions increases, pressure is mounting on IT departments to improve efficiency. Companies that take a greener approach can significantly boost their public image, while reducing their electricity costs.’

Flexible working should and is being used in a much wider context, reducing CO2 emissions and energy costs being one of the key driving factors as well as cost savings in many areas.

Flexible working is about much more than flexi time, home working and remote working is on a rapid increase but the technology is not. Why not combine both?

carbonizeIT does exactly that...we develop strategies that look at companies working structure and efficiencies and then advice on the right solutions that can help them be more flexible and adopt a greener more environmentally friendly atmosphere while encompassing a work life balance.

A people-ready business is a business that knows that people are its most important asset. Organisations excel by empowering their people with the right tools, information and opportunities. That's why we make sure every solution we create is 'people-ready': intuitive, easy-to-use, built for collaboration and just as hardworking as the people we support.

Such a strange camera angle at the beginning, to me it was painfully obvious by the ladies body language that she felt the camera intrusive.

As a working mum of school age kids I welcome this. Also remember the semi-retired who want to work part-time without their pensions being cut.

Racheljoyce is right, we need to protect the future pensions of working mothers too, as well as the semi-retired, so those working flexi-time or part-time will not suffer in the long run.

I am writing a post graduate PR research project on MPs blogging and whether it helps 2-way communication and would like to send you a survey on this subject to complete. I would very much appreciate it if you could find time to complete it.

Subject: From a suppliers point of view

Putting my political views to one side, this topic is becoming a major issue in the UK and Europe. Having worked in the IT sector for over 10 years now, I have seen a major shift to systems providing felxible working options.

I have to be honest and say that most everything stated, I believe to be true. I have seen it time and time again. The US is very big on flexible working and the technology is just starting to become mainstream and more importnantly affordable here in the UK for SME's and not just major corporations.

It is now going to the next level with Web 2.0/3.0 and social/viral networking. This is the area I am now involved in and most if not all major organisations including Government (Already have some government departments as clients) are starting to work in this model, as they see the benefit of offering staff the ability to not just work 9 to 5.30.

Companies have to remember that the next generation of business leaders are 20/30 year olds who run their lives and businesses through applications like Facebook/Huddle/My Space, this is the way these people will and do want to work.

Great to see a Political Party embracing these business attributes so early on.
