Getting young people interested in science

I was in Cheltenham on Thursday for the Science Festival.

hmm... I think science has become a subject that teaches topical ideas in the press, to people who are at a level where they find it hard to see the usefulness and unable to fully grasp the science behind the ideas, thus leaving them to believe in and regurgitate things for exams without actually achieving anything.
They should be learning about science, you know, gravity, Newton's Laws, chemical reactions, the atom etc, not about that climate change is happening and what should politics do.

I wish it was not true but Scinece is the VERY last thing that we should be getting young people to look at. All the Science and Technology jobs are being sent ofshore to India and Mr Cameron is a leading cheerleader of this.
My advice to any young person be a doctor or even better a lawyer but if you can not get into these area's then have kids, get your council house and live on welfare, you will be better rewarded in the end.

David, aren't you a proponent of faith schools? It seems to me that these schools are hugely damaging to scientific endeavor.
However scientific learning is crucial and I do agree with the sentiment.
