Gordon Brown cannot be the change that Britain needs
27/06/2007
I've just come back from the House of Commons, after what must be one of the most extraordinary Prime Minister's questions that's there's ever been, at the end of Tony Blair's 10 years.
Now we look to the future - and of course I congratulate Gordon Brown on becoming Prime Minister - but he cannot be the change that Britain needs. There are huge problems in our country: problems with the National Health Service, problems with crime in our communities, with social breakdown. Gordon Brown has been at the heart of Government for the last decade, so he's the author of many of these problems and cannot be their solution.
I think that people do want change, that people should be offered the opportunity of change, people should be able to vote for change. That's why we believe there should be a General Election straight away.

Subject: wanting election
At the risk of being rude Mr Cameron i don't recall the Tories wanting an election when John Major
took over from Thatcher, DO YOU. do you really believe the british people have short memories.

Subject: Calling for election
I don't think that what happened when Major took over from Thtacher is relevent here - however I do think that saying that an election shoudl be called ignores the fact that election took place under a system which does not cover voting for PMs.
If you establish the precedent then I take it, it would apply when a PM dies the day following an election? After all you are looking at a principle here.

Subject: Election?
Have to agree with NearlySane - the last I heard (and I'm no constitutional expert) we don't yet have 'Presidential' elections in this country. As I recall we vote for individuals at a local level, who may happen to represent a particular political party also.
Tho frankly, I'm not sure I care who or which party is elected - as the old saying goes, the government still run the country

Subject: General Election
Having watched Newsnight last night and seen that Charlie Whelan has called you desperate to be Priminister this just reaffirms this.
I remember watching on our colour TV with a remote control back in 1976 when Harold Wilson stopped being Priminister and Jim Callaghan became priminister. There was no general election then either.
As I recall a rather fetching blonde was in charge of the Tory party at the time, You know her as Baroness Thatcher, but for my primary school mates she was the Milk snatcher...
Yes Gordon is a devious sly, biding his time politician and has manoeuvred Shiny Tony out and it is with much cheering that most people have said good bye to Tony, yes they do not realise that the Changes coming will be even worse than when Tony was in, but the chance of you becoming Priminister considering there are almost three years to go before an election has to be called... I cant possibly comment.
Having taken a photo of you at the Doctors March and seen what you proposed have you done anything to stop the waste of 10000 doctors? Has the media profile been promoted about this issue, NO nothing has been forthcoming; the plain fact of the matter is that you better not fall ill in August cos not even the doctors know where they are going to be working yet.
Nobody would vote anyway Voter apathy is such a problem.

Subject: To vote or not to vote.
To vote or not to vote, that is the question? Is it not better for the country to decide the matter speedily, than to meander on with no mandate save from one's own party, and that doubtful? Truly some hath tried to continue nonetheless, but rarely hath that ended well. Think you that Brown, in such a case shall fare better than did Douglas-Home or Callaghan in olden time? I think not! Better surely for the country to decide upon the question, as Cameron saith.

I'd rather be working in the pits and have a choice of jobs than do nothing at all, even though I cannot work due to chronic illness at the moment I still look for work and in my proffesion (Mech Eng.)there is nothing out there, which makes me feel worse.

Subject: Labour's dead end government
For all the hype about a new government, the new prime minister has nothing new to offer. For a start he cannot cure an economy which is hostage to an overvalued pound and creeping inflation. Interest rates can only rise from now on. Unemployment is 1.7 million, higher than when Labour came to office a decade ago. In spite of throwing money at the NHS, he is still having to lay off health workers. The crippling burden of taxation continues to grow, money take from our people, money taken, money squandered. New Labour's so-called ethical foreign policy has been a complete faliure. The reality is things can only get worse for Gordon Brown, he can offer nothing and as David quite rightly says Brown cannot be the change that Britain needs.
