The essential principles of the NHS
21/06/2007
Today I was at Whipps Cross Hospital for a fascinating visit. Earlier in the day I also gave a speech to the NHS Confederation.

Subject: Whipps Cross Visit
Good to see a politician visiting hospitals who actually seems interested in what goes on there and doesn't just say ' Hello, what's your name? ' to little babies as Gordon Brown so often does. Trusting the professionals to run the NHS would be a good idea too, as they're the best informed about what really needs to be done there. Why not make this an even better idea though, by encouraging more medical and social service professionals to stand as Conservative canidates? Many of the European countries with the best health services are those where most health ministers have been Doctors themselves. Worth a try here too, perhaps?

Subject: Trusting professionals
The key phrase for me from this speach is "trust the professionals". If its in the health service or police or teachers or social service ,do you not think that we have become a country of professionals who are not doing what they were trained to do? There seems to be an army of untrained workers who are actually doing the work whilst professionals spend all their time justifying themselves through unread paperwork.
I like Jeromes comment about Health ministers who were doctors. Education ministers should have been teachers and so on
