"The official cost of the ID card scheme has risen by £400m to £5.31bn, the Home Office says.
The figure was released as Tony Blair announced his departure, leading to claims the opposition that the government was "burying bad news".

Can I have a refund please??

This is one of if not the only reason why I am completely opposed to the ID Card. I do not trust the Government to retain any data with accuracy or due care. The Government could acheive the same with tighter border security and checking of existing passports.

You just have to see the NHS system for Doctor Training Post applications to see what will follow!

I hope the Conservatives will continue to oppose this outrage and scrap the project when they get into power.

I just heard Gordon Brown say that the ID Card policy remains the same - yet Jack Straw was saying (at the same time!) it would be reviewed...conflict already??

From the Telegraph about Straw

But he refused to be drawn on whether Mr Brown planned to scrap the controversial ID card scheme, an initiative about which he is known to be sceptical.

I can't see how the ID card scheme will ever go through... It's an election loser.

PS> SmokeLess - did you get my PM?

Thanks to the old webcameron.org.uk website where we could Ask David questions this is one area where the Conservative's policy is clear:

No Id Cards
No Integrated Government ID Database
Money to be released for other purposes

Voting Conservative will be the only way to stop ID cards.

Really? Funny, I could have sworn the Lib Dems weren't in favour of them either...

FYI - I just found out (thanks Tizzy) that in order to get your links to work you need to highlight them with the URL link. It's next to the Img button when you're writing your comments. Hope this helps.

I believe ID Cards are just a transit smokescreen for biometric information to be included in all personal information documents. This is the gov. pdf document -
'Amongst other things, the Identity Cards Act provides the means to incorporate the functionality of an ID Card into official documents via a power known as designation.'

ID cards are good in principal, ive got one for when i visit hong kong (beats queuing for 10hours at immigration), it hold biometrics and the usual stuff like DOB. and you have to produce it when opening bank accounts and the like.

why the govts proposed ID Card scheme is a shambles is because it keeps changing its mind on what they want them for. fighting terrorism one min, controlling immigration the next.

and they accuse DC of flip flopping.

im for it in principal, but against it with this lot in charge of it, cos we know what a mess they will create of it. i mean if sites like ebay can be secure, why not some govt led computer system?

As the ID Card scheme will not fulfill any of the roles we have been told it would; crime, asylum, benefit fraud etc. is it about time those backing this in Government were surcharged?
