Security of Electricity Sub-Stations

Posted by scrubsupwell on Thursday, 01 March 2007 21:13:42

Dear David,

On 24th February last Saturday a power outage in my neighbourhood, which lasted twenty minutes, was caused by 'persons unknown' throwing a breaker in an electricity sub-station. An examination of sub-stations in the suburb revealed two broken locks and a station filled with old washing machines and tumble driers

There seems to be a case for a review of the laws relating to sub-station security. Will you tick an agenda box for a question to be asked in the house. The incident caused corruption of a database server that did not have power back-up. Also a terrorist or criminal could easily cut power and disable multiple alarms and enhance non-detection of burglars (especially on a dark night) because of loss of power to street lights and shop security lights.

If you're relying on the public electricity network alone to power mission-critical systems like security systems then you're daft. Besides, I think David would get bewildered looks if he challenged Tony Blair at PMQs over the government's record on reducing 20-minute power-cuts.
