Would DC agree with Jeremy Clarkson's version of hoodie yob adoration?

VOTE CLARKSON FOR PM?

Bring some sanity back to this cretinous country.

Jeremy Clarkson should be on Channel 5.

Clarkson for PM?
Erm, no, Vespasian….

Completely witless? (Ooh, that’s disappeared since I last looked!)
Erm, no, Dustly

What makes Clarkson interesting is that he is genuine. (Or at least he seems it to me.)
There is no hedging of bets, no carefully crafted ambiguity to allow him a way out afterwards. He doesn’t care if he’s offensive.

It is that very attitude which makes him entertaining. The man’s honest and yet he’s also a child trapped in a man’s body, however, makes no attempt to hide it.
Frankly, I like Jeremy Clarkson.

Would I want a man like that to run the country?
Hm, would Jeremy Clarkson listen to advice? Would he not just do what came to mind, irrespective of consequence, and bulldoze it through regardless?
‘Forget the No.67 bus route! We’ll substitute it with Concord!’

In that way Clarkson would really be much of what we’ve already had so far, albeit form a more rightwing perspective.

So, the man’s a good columnist and entertainer. But that’s where it ends.
If only Blair would have taken up presenting Celebrity Squares, or something…

Not sure what Brown’s alternative career might have been. Night-watchman at a paint drying factory perhaps…

I can't stand Clarkson. He's on a par with the odious Richard Littlejohn & Garry Bushell.
Obnoxious, reactionary right-winger.

I enjoy his total lack of PCness.

PCness has destroyed and continues to eat the fabric of the country by ensuring that everything anyone says is capable of being obfusticated or twisted out of.

Clarkson calls a spade a shovel and gets on with it.

The fact that a lot of his opinions are just plain wrong (He hates motor bikes) mean I reckon he is a git, but he makes life more interesting and therefore provides real value.

Clarkson is a prat in my opinion. I think a lot of people are fooled by the media regarding so-called political correctness.
It's certainly true that there have been some ridiculous events where political correctness has been taken to an absurd level, but these events are pretty infrequent and not really important.
The likes of Clarkson, Bushell and Littlejohn seem obsessed with the notion of political correctness. I've never understood how they can rant on about not being allowed to express potentially offensive opinions...and then express those opinions to millions of readers/viewers!
As far as I'm aware none of these people have ever been arrested for expressing their extremely distasteful views. If political correctness is so prevalent in our society, how come these miscreants haven't been silenced?!

Clarkson is an arrogant, narrow minded bigot who cannot accept that there is any other side to an argument than *his*.

Hmm, Thatcher, Blair, Brown...

Yep, sounds like perfect Prime Ministerial material...!

Well, I’m not sure about this view of Clarkson as a pillar of the right.

Yes, he’s a stuck in his own way. But I don’t see his attraction as his sharing my views entirely.

His rants have something of Victor Meldrew’s rants in ‘One Foot in the Grave’.

Much of their content is about the futility of it all, when confronted by life’s modern challenges. I really don’t think it ought to be taken too seriously. Frankly I doubt he does.

Clarkson fulfilled the role of ‘grumpy old man’, before it became a formulaic BBC2 TV series, with ‘grumpy old women’ thrown in…

And any man who can describe a car as knicker-elastic-snappingly-good deserves some sort of credit. :)

That said, I know him only threw the Sunday Times and Top Gear.
I have no idea what he writes for the Sun. So he might be really venomous in those articles, for all I know. But I somewhat doubt it….

I love clarkson, he makes me laugh espceially on top gear with his complete disregard of polical correctness.

Markeb - what has he said that deems an arrest warrant? you may not like what he says but it is not an arrestable offence to state an opinion on a subject. If it is, maybe all of us on this website should be arrested too

Sounds like so many people in this country that it hardly merits his elevation to PM. I don't think you are entirely right here though. So much of the man's presentation is down to his entertainment role. Sometimes I glimpse another side to him that is kind and commonsensical... not the average criteria for PM either. He does seem, however, very right wing. Not extremist, but further across than I would be happy about.
Anyway, Vespasian, why Jeremy Clarkson in the first place? Why not Alan Titchmarsh, or David Dimbleby, or Fiona Bruce, or Alan Rickman, or Judi Dench or (God help us) Jonathan Ross? Or anyone else in the public eye?

I agree Jess, Jeremy is kind. The Xscape is often plagued by bored teenagers trying to ride the gash bin train or make the driver crash by jumping on the carriages. I guess they wanted to impress JC as young kids often do in a crowd.

mrposhman-I meant that the likes of Clarkson constantly claim that political correctness means that people are not allowed to voice controversial opinions; if that is the case then how come Clarkson hasn't been silenced by the so-called liberal elite for expressing his non-pc views to millions of readers and TV viewers?
I'm all in favour of free speech and certainly wouldn't want him silenced. I just can't understand why some people claim that they aren't allowed to express certain views at the same time as they are expressing those views.

markub, i think the bit that you've missed is that most tv presenters are afraid of being un-pc in light of the fact that they may get bad reviews and thus bad media attention.

People like clarkson and jimmy carr don't give a stuff what people think of them and hence just get on with saying what they want.

Jeremy Clarkson HAS been banned from saying unPC language on TV.

They used to refer to some cars as "ginger beer" a slang for queer.

BBC Condemns Clarkson 'Gay' Jibe

Quote:
Derogatory references to homosexuality made by Top Gear's Jeremy Clarkson had the potential to offend and should not have been broadcast, the BBC has ruled.
Four complaints from viewers have been upheld after he agreed with an audience member that a car was "a bit gay", on a programme screened in the UK in July.

The presenter also described the vehicle as "very ginger beer", taken to be rhyming slang for the term "queer".

The BBC complaints unit said there was "no editorial purpose" for the remarks.

Those remarks made by Clarkson were broadcast! They weren't edited out of the show.
It's quite right that he was lambasted for the comments but I keep hearing that the BBC is a major player in the so-called liberal elite. If that's true then how come they haven't sacked Clarkson?

"I keep hearing that the BBC is a major player in the so-called liberal elite."

Whether you perceive the BBC to be left wing or right I think says more about the political persuasion of the viewer rather than the actual personality or programme commented on. I have no view on Clarkson from a political point of view however I find him arrogant, opinionated and a bit slow off the mark. One thing you could guarentee is he would lose any election he stood for, it wouldn't be difficult for the opposition to run circles round him.
