Title: UK Cod Fishing Quota ..

I am outraged to learn that the UK is 'allowed' only ten per cent of the quota for cod fishing - in our own waters, in the
English Channel, and with Spain fishing freely at over 70%. As we've seen in the news this week, literally tons of beautiful, fresh cod has to be thrown back, dead, into the sea from our boats. This will lead to depletion of stock in the sea. It also deprives our own fisherman of their right to a livelihood, with some flexibility on how they choose to fish (ok within agreed limits), and what kind of fish they bring to market. So far, I have only seen one political voice objecting to this disgrace - once again, the reliable Nigel Farage of UKIP. I sincerely trust that this bitter and disgraceful arrangement will be brought to Parliament urgently by the Conservatives in the coming week. If there are any genuine issues about our EU masters, then this one surely must be taken into open discussion, protest and re-negotiation fast.

If you don't, then it will be very hard to believe that the Tories have any intention whatsoever of standing firm against EU dominance and economic control; and that the sacrific of our own fishermen is actually ok with you. I would like to hear William Hague speaking out on this whole issue of injustice, betrayal and disgrace to our shores and our national identity. Is this what Ted Heath had in mind I wonder in signing us up to a common market? Hardly common.

Where did you get the 70% and 10% figures from? And isn't the reason the Spanish are allowed to fish there because they bought the licences to do so from the English?

Anyway, surely the real scandal is that the fish are being thrown back dead?

There is no justification for permitting such a terrible waste of fish! The law should be that if you catch the fish, you must sell (or consume) it - even if it means you have to buy more quota. I understand that's how they do it in Iceland, where cod are once again plentiful.

This is something Britain should be taking a stand on: banning wasting of fish and threatening to withdraw from the Common Fisheries Policy if the rest of Europe doesn't follow suit! But instead the government are insisting on even more fish being wasted!

This was one area where DC showed that he may not be all he is cracked up to be. He was all for removing the UK (not Scotland) from the Common Fisheries Policy. But he then bottled it. Since then he has not uttered a word on it. It was at this point that I thought, oh oh, is he all talk and no action, and it certainly crossed my mind that he might not have the stomach to take the hard decisions if it meant a fight with our international partners.

I for one think it would be both a vote winner, and morally justified to do so. And if the French and Spanish don’t like it, well tough luck.

I agree with you TonyTT. DC really must get his act together on foreign policy - it's a big black hole for Tories.
