I thought I'd introduce myself properly here seeing as some people on the thread I created are judging me solely on my young age.

I live in the south of England and am under 18 years old.
I go to college and have 2 jobs.
I have one brother, one step-brother, two step sisters, a mum and a step-dad.
I am very close with my mums side of the family.

I enjoy riding my bike, playing football, talking, just being with friends and family.

I have no idea what line of work I want to do.

If you have any questions about me I would be pleased to answer them.

Wish I could write more but I must dash… byeeee!

hi duke, yes you do seem to have created a quite lively thread to say the least.

What is it that your doing at college?

I do understand what your going through having just turned 18 myself. But in essance i think its attitudes not rights that need to change.

Hopefully this thread will be less heated.

Chulcoop I can interpret your post in totally divergent ways.

Are you saying "When I Grow Up I Want To Be A (insert job description here) is the stock phrase of many a three year old. NOT knowing what you want to do suggests a more mature appreciation of a wide range of opportunities that will take some time to come to a decision" ?

Or are you saying "For God's Sake Grow Up And Realise You Need To Get A Grip On How You're Going To Pay Your Mortgage?"

For the record. I wanted to be a research scientist ever since blowing lumps out of the chem lab aged 12. At 16 I was quite startled by the way I **WASNT** treated like a kid by people I later realised were pretty eminent scientists. By the age of 24 I was qualified and writing research papers.

Then Maggie Thatcher threw me onto the dole. Just in time for Christmas. Thanks a bunch.

I picked myself up and went into the business of designing things to let soldiers kill each other, and plenty of bystanders with.

Then when that line of business went into recession I moved over into IT for telecomms banking and insurance.

Then I gave it all up and went into the very VERY lucratibve business of turning horse manure into organic compost. Which remained lucrative until Tony Blair's Little Green Helpers realised I'd thwarted his plans to tax the backsides off riding schools. So he came after me demanding thousands of pounds for licences to make compost.

So I gave that up too.

My daughter aged 22 has wanted to teach young children with "learning disabilities" (no, I DONT know what the PC phrase for that is and guess what I dont CARE either) since she was 12. She finally got the last bit of paper to do that last year.

My other daughter now 17 has wanted to follow my initial career as a biologist for some time but just recently has switched horses slightly and now declares a desire to follow the example of two family friends and go into forensic science. Maybe the idea of digging up gardens appeals to her. I have no idea.

But I hope this rambling serves to indicate that not knowing what you want to do is neither a sign of weakness nor immaturity. Because it's an odds-on bet you'll either not do it anyway, or get chucked off the job after a couple of years.

Hi Duke, what kind of political views do you have? Conservative? Liberal? Anarchist? Environmentalist?

chulcoop, i don't see your point with regards to "knowing what line of work you want to do" has to do with being a teenager. There are many adults who also do not know what they want so this is not an argument that really sways the debate in the other thread.

Duke - Maybe you could let us know what some of your political areas of interest are?

You say you dont know what you want to do, " NOT EVEN AN INCLING? " Following on from your last thread, if you became prime minister what would be the first 10 things would you do? meaningful to all, not just teenagers, im'e interested...... John

when ur an adult most HAVE to do something for a living wheras many children dont know what they wnat to do.

That is the difference.

When I was 10 i knew i wanted to become a programmer and achieved it.

Now i like debating on boards and being contraversial.

Duke goes to college, has two jobs and is engaging in political debate. This is certainly more mature than most adults.

Hey 21parque you're showing your age! Probably an astronaut or a leading banker now, regardless of gender!
I wouldn't know though, cos I wanted to drive a steam train myself!

at 10 it was a professional footballer, rock star or pilot.

I'm now working in finance and just passed my qualifications but at the age of 25 still not sure I want to stay in finance. I probably won't move out of business but i still don't know what I want to do.

Hey Duke,My ambitions always ran a little towards the distructive side of things, you know, demolition, explosives and so on.Over the years I've graduated to the construction industry. The point being, you wont realy know what you want do do till you try a few things,so stay flexible in your ambitions, but aim high.

chrisbarber,

I am doing Physics, Chemistry, Biology and a language at college.

Attitudes do need to change... and I think that changes in the laws to allow equal rights would allow attitudes to change too.

chulcoop,

I will explain why I have been inactive on my other thread after posting this.
Yes there are differences between adults and children just as there are differences between men and women, blacks and whites, lawyers and bank managers. Your statement holds no point.

votedave & mrposhman,

The views I hold are not all too radical… they are a sort of mixture of all the main political parties.
Some of my views are:
We need more nuclear power plants as well as more wind turbines.
Paper work is important in the police force but we need to create less paper work for our police officers so they will have more time to “fight crime”
Less money should be spent on nuclear weapons and more money should be spent on our ground forces, navy and air force.

These are only a few of my views on politics but you must excuse me because I fear it would take me a life time to go through them all… after all everything is politics these days.

21parque,

My brother is 14 years old, my step brother is 26 years old, my step sisters are 24 and 19 years old. They are interested in the things that happen around them. I think that counts doesn’t it?
If I was Prime Minister what would I do? What a question! And I have no idea.
I’m interested in politics but I doubt I know the first thing about being the Prime Minister let alone a back bencher.
I mean would you know what you wanted to do if you were Prime Minister?
It’s easy to have a guess and to dream that it would all go smoothly without anyone opposing your ideas or attempting to change them but once you are actually Prime Minister I’m sure everything will look and sound a lot different.

----

I would like to thank all of you for your kind words and support (or not as the case may be).
keep and eye out for my other thread in the "Politics" section of these forums (Title: Teenagers are treated like second class citizens).

thank you very much.

*-Duke-*

Duke, even in the world of work you are discriminated on by age.

You will see requirements such as "You must have a degree in something and 7 years management experience"

Or in plain english, you must be at least 30 to apply and most likely 45.

I have seen a lot of idiot managers and often the 25 year olds beat them.

However on paper they would not be able to apply for those jobs. What is your view on that?

Also if an ugly 50 year old turned up to a nightclub even if dressed the same she may be refused.

If you are a model then your career is usually over by 30 ish.

As an IT worker your career is over by 35.

What are your views on this?

Answers on the other thread please....

Cliff
