I don't think Facebook should be banned in the workplace. I think employees are for the most part 'responsible' - and they tend to use Facebook in their downtime.

It's 'give and take' in the world of work.

Sure, cyberslackers waste time on social network sites, but prohibition may be overreaction.

Totally agree with canvas.

What are they going to ban next, having coffee at your desk in case you scald yourself? :D

Duly amended, thanks astro! Aww, I'm normally good at spelling! :D

I like using Facebook during my breaks at university, as do many at university. Employers and college staff should be more trusting of employees and students - in fact, I bet that if someone is on a website such as Facebook when they are a bit bored with their work, 10 minutes later they'll feel ready to work. Humans should not be expected to be perfect.

How does this thing work? I've had people asking me to add them as a friend but it all seems a bit complicated and not really worth the effort.

Hi Tony

Yeh bit like msm but u can have a laugh with your friends by putting amusing things on each others wall - graffiti extravaganza or other stuff like vid clips, music etc.

The concept is to give your friends an insight into you and get to know you a bit more. It's fun.

Hi Tony, there are literally thousands of things you can do on Facebook. It is a social networking site. The more you use it - the more you will 'get it'.

I joined as so I can see my daughter and her stuff

I don't spend too much time as Webcanmeron and a couple of other Blogs and websites over fill the free time I allocate myself

But you can put pix up there so all can see them or not bother.

I have used it to record pictures from the most unlikely but highly enjoyable event I went to last week. In the most stunning place there was a "Country Music Festival " Don't go there CM isn't really my thing either.

But the sight of 10,000 Japanese folk, dressed in Cowboy hats and boots, tasseled shirts and jeans line dancing has to be one of the more ludicrous things I ever see. I revel and giggle still

If any you are interested feel free here is the public album:- Aso Country Gold

Canvas it was indeed. Did you see the location Absolutely stunning.. It is on one edge of the biggest Volcanic Caldera in the world looking at the Volcano itself. And clear air wow.

(the music and the Boots Dancing was something else again)

The thing with the Japanese is that they are well off mostly and do have money to spend on leisure activities. They Travel a lot and things like Baseball Games are very well attended. If you look in this album you will see the Fukuoka Dome which is about 200 Yards for my door. Fukuoka Dome

So Line dancing is just an quirky extension of all that.

Because I find computers difficult,,, I shy away from any sites that tend to give up your privacy,, with own detailed front page with photos etc. Its only because I dont understand what I would be signing up to,, and know enough to make it worthwhile..... are you bombarded with adverts? and how can you protect your children or grandchildren from getting into wrong hands,, if they show photos? Poss frightened of what I cant control....

I've finally managed to set-up an account but I'm still not sure what to do. I'd like to meet fellow movie collectors on there, real movies I mean!, not the rubbish they make today.

Tony you can search for your friends on Facebook and 'poke' them - inviting them to be your 'friend'. You can invite other friends to join.

Join a network - usually people join local networks i.e. London, Plymouth whatever... or workplace or school/uni . The majority of BBC employees on the BBC network consider themselves to be liberal. Interesting?

You can also join 'groups'. Search for things that interest you.

Play around with it and you will 'get it'.

There are thousands of applications to put on your profile page. It's easier once you have a few friends on your profile. You can adjust all your settings etc.

Good luck.

You can set in your preferences who can view what...

Privacy Overview
Facebook wants you to share your information with exactly the people you want to see it. On this page, you'll find all the controls you need to set who can see your profile and the stuff in it, who can find and contact you on Facebook, and more.

Quote:
Block People
If you block someone, they will not be able to search for you, see your profile, or contact you on Facebook. Any ties you currently have with a person you block will be broken (friendship connections, relationships, etc).

Facebook Principles
We built Facebook to make it easy to share information with your friends and people around you. We understand you may not want everyone in the world to have the information you share on Facebook; that is why we give you control of your information. Our default privacy settings limit the information displayed in your profile to your networks and other reasonable community limitations that we tell you about.

Facebook follows two core principles:

1. You should have control over your personal information.
Facebook helps you share information with your friends and people around you. You choose what information you put in your profile, including contact and personal information, pictures, interests and groups you join. And you control the users with whom you share that information through the privacy settings on the My Privacy page.

2. You should have access to the information others want to share.
There is an increasing amount of information available out there, and you may want to know what relates to you, your friends, and people around you. We want to help you easily get that information.

Sharing information should be easy. And we want to provide you with the privacy tools necessary to control how and with whom you share that information.

Canvas, thanks for the info. I've just added a link to the Conservative party website on my profile page. I'm starting to get the hang of it now. I've added a load of Jane Powell videos and I've set up a movie group with lots of my favourite videos on it but no-one has joined yet. I'm looking for some good groups to join. There seem to be a lot! I liked the political bit so I put 'Very Conservative' which I suppose I am in a way, I'd love life to be like it was in the 1950s, picket fences and a pretty 'Jane Powell type' wife cooking in the kitchen, a slow pace of life, so much nicer than the horrible world of today.

You can search for your 'friends' on Facebook. It will go through your email address book to let you know if anyone you know already belongs to facebook - and then you can invite them to be 'your friend'.

But - do you think this should be banned from the workplace??

PS> You can always 'poke' jonjii LoL :)

Canvas, thanks for the tips. My view on Facebook is that I wouldn't ban it from the workplace. If I had charge of an office full of people I wouldn't mind them using the internet so long as they got their work done. I remember from my time doing ROSLA at school that in the final year they actually allowed us to play the radio at break times, the younger ones weren't allowed to, it made for a better atmosphere definitely. So I'd rather have a happy workforce. I don't see anything wrong in someone say listening to 'test match special' as they work.

Tonymak be careful of Facebook It can become addictive.. and it is interactive... It is not as if one can put it on iin the background... nope It is in your face.

If you give a blanket OK to you employess I am afraid you might find you lose 2 to 3 hours a day per on-line computer as time seems to telescope.

On Facebook my politics have to be described as "Other" because I'm neither liberal nor conservative, I'm an anarchist-communist.

Well then RA please explain to me how you think the world should work.

Or are you and Anarchist Coomunist because you are just too lazy or inept to do anything yourself so wish to help yourself to the fruits of someone else's effort.

jonjii, RedAnarchist has every right to decide on how he should describe his politics on Facebook! :) Even if you wish he was a Tory instead of a commie-anarchist! LoL

I think the world would be SO boring if we all had the same thoughts and ideas!! RedAnarchist - be true to yourself!

Now - Jonjii - re: Facebook. I think British employers need to be brought into the 21st century. Happy employees mean productive employees. It's give and take. To ban Facebook at work is bound to create resentment - and negative energy is not conducive to a healthy working environment.

Work hard, be free, be happy, be creative, live your life, live your dreams - just don't ban facebook!

Oh Canvas RedAnarchist can be what he likes.. I am just interested in why. Anyone who pretends to be an anarchist or a communist in this day and age must have something wrong with them.. Neither work..

Anyway My feeling is that Employers who have people with on line computers should allow those people to do whatever they want as long as the company objectives are met..

The trick is to set the objectives in the first place.

whichever way you look at it thogh Facebook is a distraction and a HUGE time consumer.

if you don't think they work, why not go to revleft.com, where about 10,000 people worldwide think it can?
