Like Royal Mail the BBC is being "deliberately prepared" by the government in conivance with it's BBC Directors to be privatised with huge share options for the current directors!
Well, I'd like to see both privatized and as soon as possible! The lesson we all ought to have learnt by now is that things are run best by the private sector. Of course we should still provide a service when it comes to health care and education but even in those spheres its clear that private works better.
Yorker, that may have been the case prior to the digital age but now the BBC has outlived its usefulness and most people wouldn't miss it. The BBC can no longer justify its existence. The only thing that might save it is if the BBC goes subscription-only with a smart card and encrypted channels but after a while its revenue would collapse because people just won't pay for the output. Programming on the BBC is poor, all the talk about quality programming is a myth.

I really don't think that's true, tonyM. It may be that the BBC has a bigger role than ever in this "digital age". That's a deep discussion that needs to take place.
If we left it to commercial TV we would have non stop reality shows (Big Brother - get me out of here) and sport with very little left for news, current events, actuality and educational service type shows... No one really wants to pay for them but they actually provide massive benefits.
In South Africa the SABC was/is alao a Government propaganda machine.. Not so here; the BBC'c charter is meant to give it neutrality, although many on this blog (myself included) had noticed an adverse bias against us.. I don't know if it has swung back yet..There is little political commentary of note this last weekend.
But no... I believe that debate should happen and the Charter renewed or amended..
