LIVE TURTLES ETC FOR SALE AS FOOD AT TESCO IN CHINA

Posted by Kenny on Saturday, 27 January 2007 11:34:56

Dear DavidHaving seen the national news, how do you feel about Tesco selling live turtles and other creatures for food in their new store in a country known for skinning dogs and snakes alive; boiling and blow-torch roasting cats alive and other cruel and gruesome practices? I am not a vegetarian. However, if an animal is to be 'dispatched' it should be done quickly and painlessly - humanely. Neither humans nor animals should be mutilated and tortured for pleasure or any other reason for that matter. I shall be suspending my custom indefinitely.

We should be more worried on how Tescos are playing the consumer in this country.
We should be more worried that our farmers and homegrown produce is being ignored by the superstore, and would rather import form abroad.
I am more concerned with Tescos domination in this country and its effects on small business, it is total rubbish for any report to suggest that Tesco is not doing anything wrong with the way it competes with the rest of the high street, village stores,
I know that Tescos uses black mail approach when dealing with suppliers, a case of if you don’t supply to us at a lower price we will withdraw your products from all our stores., negotiation is fine but when no one else can compete it will eventually have a damaging effect of the economy and small business and the customer, who Tesco brain washes to think are their main focus.
The conservative party should address this as it has an huge effect of the enviroment, with Tesco and such stores using over seas products, that have to be shipped, there is also the use of cars etc to get to these super stores which is not much good when we are encouraging people to use their cars less, packaging is over used in superstores.
Using your local butchers, green grocers and backeries you will avoid much of the above problems that superstores such as Tesco are creating.
The consumer is blind to Tescos strategy, you will find that staple goods are reduced and cant be beat, but other goods are marked up higher than your local corner shop, green grocers. Spar etc
In time this will lead to problems as Tesco will get so much control we will not be left with a choice but to shop there and Tesco WILL call the shots on what you pay.
There is also a question mark over how Tesco and its garages are able to build on some of its newer sites, when over the years these sites have been protected from construction and propert development.......?

How is this different from buying lobsters, crabs or fish alive? The Chinese like their food fresh, and however misguided you feel that might be, it is their taste. I'm interested by your suggestion that it is done 'for pleasure'. Do you mean for pleasure as in the pleasure of the food tasting better or do you think that some perverse pleasure is taken in the butchery process itself?

I agree with coolcatmillie that Tesco's ethics in its treatment of suppliers in the UK is a far greater issue than what it chooses to sell to people in outlets in foreign countries. If it abides by the laws of that country and it is what customers want, it is only good business practice to supply it to them

There might be many issues, but that doesn't mean that they're to the total exclusion of others such a animal cruelty. I've never met anyone yet whose chosen method of popping their clogs is to be skinned, boiled or burnt alive. Does anyone really believe that doing that to other sentient beings isn't cruel? It's not anthropomorphism either, but it is compassion, caring and kindness.

Yes and I do like knowing that in this country the mutilation of our food is done out of our view. I would prefer to buy life produce and dispatch it my self, at least then I can give the animal the humane treatment it deserves. Take chickens for an example here in the UK, they are hung on machines that chop their heads off then they are chopped up with out any human coming in contact, and finally packed into plastic trays that strip them of any decency and hides the inhumane treatment they have just gone through.

I think any animal deserves a humane ending to its life, a turtle can suffer a lingering agonising death that lasts over an hour.

Should a UK company, made by its UK customers, turn its back on their values ?

There is a Petition raised to try and stop Tesco doing this.
