Europe should stop picking fluff out of their navel

Posted by David on Wednesday, 07 March 2007 12:39:50

We want to fight for a decentralised, open, competitive, flexible Europe. That’s why we’ve set up the Movement for European Reform, which calls on Europe to start focusing on things that actually matter to people, instead of constitutions and timetables. On Tuesday, I travelled to Brussels for the inaugural conference of the MER.

William Hague was our guest blogger in Brussels, click here to view his post.

You're right about the ' 3 G's '; without adapting to today's globalised world, Europe will simply lag further and further behind the countries that do adapt to it. What's more, without progress on Global Warming and Global Poverty, tomorrow's world won't be worth living in and our grandchildren will understandably hate us for not having done enough in time. What worries me, though, is how Britain could help make this happen with the help of just minor powers like the Czechs. Very decent people, no doubt, but how much weight do they really carry in today's Europe? Don't get me wrong, I really want you to succeed here because this is so important for all our futures, but don't you have to find a way to get some of the major powers who really run things in Brussels on board for some of this? Why not try to start with Sarkozy if he wins?

Absolutely spot on! - Keep up the good work on your policy and position on Europe.

I have lived and worked in Europe; I was married to a Greek national for 20 years, and I have owned properties in France and Greece, so I am far from being 'a little Englander', nor am I anti-Europe - but both personally and profesionally I have been totally fed up in recent years with the EU's inability to keep to their remit, and to deal competently with the key issues that really matter, rather than their track-record of obsessive micro-managing and burocratic incompetance!

Agreed. Absolutely.

Yes, this is 99% my position. I think Europe (when reformed), will be the only way forward for Britain. But in truth - how many other leaders would take part in such reform campaigns? Angela Merkel? President Chirac?

Margaret Thatcher was able to tell the EC straight about the UK's interests and did so very successfully, even if she was a minority amongst the European leaders. It can be done.

Derek Scott was by far the most persuasive speaker at the conference - aside from DC of course!
